THE MENTORSHIP PROJECT
5 November 2016. It's 23:45 on a Saturday night, so no fancy quotes to kick this off. No high philosophy. Maybe later.
I'm envisioning this to be a group of up to four aspirant and assistant guides, all working to gain at least AMGA Certification in one of the disciplines. Ideally we are all going to benefit from this Project.
I'll be sending out a group email on the 1st and 15th outlining my schedule for the next 4 weeks (as best as I know it); possible opportunities for The Project to get out for a day, or two, or seven; and possible opportunities to shadow my work days. Other communication may be by phone or text.
I'd like to check in with you monthly at least by phone, and I ask that you commit to attending at least one Project day a quarter. I hope to be able to offer at least six of these days a quarter, so ideally our calendars will match at least once. At this time, I don't see it necessary to require any shadowing. As time goes on I think we'll tighten this down quite a bit.
I have seen guides use "internships" and "shadowing opportunities" as a resource for "unpaid assistant guiding". I don't condone this. By definition, if you are "shadowing" you are not getting paid and not protected under L&I, so I will not ask you to take a guide's roll, except by necessity in an emergency.
If I haven't scared you off yet and you're still reading this, I have a few questions for you. Then we should have a phone call conversation, and then we'll get this ball rolling, and you should expect the first email to land in your inbox on the next 1st or 15th.
